House Moving Checklist

Plan Your Move With Confidence

Moving house is consistently ranked one of life’s most stressful events — dozens of tasks, big and small, spread across weeks, any one of which can slip through the cracks if it’s not written down somewhere. Our free moving checklist fixes that. It’s built from years of real residential moves handled by Alexanders’ senior surveyors and removal teams, organised into the order things actually need doing, not just a generic list pulled off the internet.

Whether you’ve got two months’ notice or two weeks, this checklist works the same way: find where you are, and pick up from there. It covers the full domestic move — from booking your removal to your first week settling into the new place — however much or little time you’ve got.

What’s Inside the Complete Moving Checklist

The checklist is broken into stages so you can jump straight to wherever your move currently stands, whether that’s months out or just days away:

  • Eight weeks before — booking your BAR-accredited removal company, arranging your home survey, and starting the big de-clutter
  • Four to six weeks before — schools, fixtures and fittings, parking permits, and collecting packing materials
  • Two weeks before — the full utilities switch-over and who to notify, from your bank to the DVLA
  • The week of the move — defrosting the freezer, dismantling furniture, and clearing the loft
  • Moving day itself — what to carry with you, what to leave for the removal team, and how to hand over the keys
  • Your first week — registering with a new GP, council and school, and settling into your new home

Why You Should Use a Removals Checklist

A good moving house checklist does two things a mental to-do list can’t: it puts tasks in the right order, and it makes sure nothing falls through the cracks between exchange and moving day. Missed a change-of-address form for your bank? Forgot to defrost the freezer the night before? Left the fuse box location a mystery in the new house? A proper checklist for moving house catches all of it — whether you’re working through it over two months or condensing it into two weeks.

Plenty of moves come together with very little notice — a quick chain, a new job, a tenancy that’s ended sooner than planned — and that’s exactly when a clear checklist matters most. There’s no “right” amount of notice; there’s just knowing what’s next.
