Why London Parking Suspension Costs Vary by Borough

Each of London’s 33 local authorities — the 32 boroughs plus the City of London — sets its own fee structure and notice period under its own Traffic Management Order powers. There’s no central London parking authority. That means three things worth understanding before you plan a move date:

• Notice periods range from 3 working days to 17. Bexley and Bromley can often process a suspension in 3 working days; Camden needs 17. If your move date is fixed, this is the single biggest constraint on when you can start the paperwork.
• Fees aren’t roughly similar — they differ by a factor of ten or more. A first-day suspension can be free (Islington), around £25 (Hounslow), or several hundred pounds before you’ve reserved a second day (City of London, RBKC on a long suspension).
• Some councils actively discount house moves. Camden, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, and Greenwich all waive part of the standard bay charge specifically for domestic removals — a detail that’s easy to miss if you’re not checking each council’s page individually.

Parking Suspension vs. Parking Dispensation — Which Do You Need?

Councils generally offer two different permissions, and they are not interchangeable:

• A suspension physically reserves marked bays for your vehicle. It’s enforceable — other cars parked there can be issued a Penalty Charge Notice or relocated. This is what you want for a full house move with a large van.
• A dispensation (or yellow-line waiver) permits a named vehicle to wait somewhere a restriction would normally apply, without reserving the space. It’s usually cheaper per day, but doesn’t stop someone else parking there first. Sutton, Merton and several other boroughs price this separately and it’s sometimes explicitly offered for smaller domestic removals.

If you’re moving a full household, a suspension is almost always the safer call. A dispensation can work for a smaller man-and-van job where you’re in and out within an hour or two.

Parking Suspensions on TfL Red Routes in London

Major arterial roads — marked with single or double red lines — aren’t managed by the borough at all. They’re part of the Transport for London Road Network, and TfL runs its own permission system:

• TfL doesn’t offer bay “suspensions” for removals — only dispensations, at £48/day per vehicle on a red line or £38/day in a loading bay.
• You’ll need at least 6 working days’ notice, applied for directly through TfL, not the council.
• In TfL’s own words, dispensations on red lines are “only granted in exceptional circumstances” — for a typical house move, the realistic plan is to suspend a bay on the nearest side street instead, which is where a removals company’s local knowledge earns its keep.

Parking Suspensions When Your Move Crosses Two London Boroughs

If your old and new addresses sit in different boroughs — which is common for anything other than a short local move — you’ll need two separate applications, two separate fees, and two different notice periods. Plan around whichever borough needs the longer lead time; there’s no way to fast-track the slower one to match the quicker one.

It’s also worth checking carefully where a road forms a genuine borough boundary — opposite sides of the same street can fall under different councils, so confirm the exact side rather than assuming based on the postcode alone.

What Can Go Wrong After Your Parking Suspension Is Approved

An approved suspension isn’t a guarantee nothing changes before moving day:

• Emergency utility works (a burst water main, urgent gas repair) can override an existing suspension with little warning.
• Someone else parks in your suspended bay. Photograph the vehicle and the signage, note the registration, and report it to the council’s parking enforcement team — don’t try to move the vehicle yourself.
• Major events nearby — football fixtures, concerts, marathons — can bring extra congestion and restrictions even without directly affecting your bay.
